Bauerwood and Pinewood 3rd Graders are working on projects for their upcoming Language Artist field trip at the GRAM!  They are creating their own textured habitat for their invented mixed up creatures.  Once their art is complete they will work with their classroom teachers to create a narrative about their creature.  Research supports connecting art to writing to enhance students' writing skills.  The field trip at the GRAM focuses on concepts of description, compare/contrast, beginning/middle/end, and problem/solution.

Friends From Thailand!

Sandy Hill

Sandy Hill Fourth Grade students were able to have the unique opportunity to have art partners from Thailand! Our student teacher  from last year was the teacher (Kru Sarah) in a classroom with 3rd through 5th grade (Pratom) students. Her students drew stylized self portraits & sent them to us! We used the element of pattern to decorate frames for the portraits! We sent the students videos in which our students shared some interesting facts about the USA and Michigan! Sadly, we could not Skype, because of time difference!  We will share our framed portraits with the students via e-mail/ internet!

5th Grade Pinch Pots

No, David!

1st grade students spent time looking at and reading several books by author/illustrator, David Shannon.  After reading the book, No, David, students brainstormed ideas for additional pages to add to the book. 

We discussed how background details can help explain what the author has written and how they are essential in helping children decode the illustrations in a picture book.  After sketching their ideas, students drew their final project on 12x18 sulphite paper.  In order to make their drawings bold, like David Shannon's, students added color with oil pastel.  The final step will be to go over all the lines with black oil pastel.
